Tonights Bible Reading

Tonight's Reading was Genesis Chapter 29-40.  These chapters showed me lots of pretty wild things going on with relationships back then.  Men frequently married cousins.  Women who could not have children would often bring the maidservants to their husbands to sleep with so they could bear a child.  Men had several wives.  Seems the ration of boys to girls born was way out of whack in favor of boys.  Women actually would wait 7 years for a man.  Men would pay fathers for their wives in labor for seven years and offerings of livestock for favor was a normal thing.  The one thing that puzzles me is why did God show favor to some men and not others.  Guessing the others would not accept or worship God.  Not clear yet, but lots of reading to still do.  Jealousy seemed to be pretty rampant. Joseph was actually sold by his jealous brothers who lied about him vanishing.

My question would be is where did the days go when women appreciated a good man.  Women submitted to the men and their husbands.  The phrase "Till Death Do Us Part"  meant something.  They stood by each other no matter what.  Now don't take this as a statement of women should be slaves to men, I mean it as a statement that couples give up to quick and easy these days.  You can get divorced for $150.  Men or Women will give up, after a week of challenges, on each other.  Back in the beginning they could spend weeks moving and years waiting for their mate.

Chapter 40 starts with the story of the Cup bearer and the Baker being tossed in jail.  Their dreams were determined to be their fate.

What I take from this is that Only the Power of Go at work in men who love him can overcome the barriers that separate us.  Do something today that actively builds a bridge to someone whom you may not otherwise relate.  (These were words from an excerpt in the chapter and not mine)  But hey really sum things up.  We need to live by faith in God and not faith in man.  Man has created many distortions in Gods plan.  Why live like other men who may not believe in God and KNOW he is our Savior when you can live like God wants you to?  Easy to say huh?
